Norton Internet Security 2004 (NIS)
Installation and removal: Installation does not cause problems, but of all analyzed installers this is the heaviest.
Advantages:
1. integrated solution (antivirus + Firewall + IDS + ad blocker)
2. remote update
3. in tuning IDS there is an option of blocking of all packets from a host, which conducts attack on the preset time (30 minutes by default)
4. it contains additional plugins, in particular, antispam - system, which has been incorporated in Outlook Express
5. with the destruction of processes of NIS it continued to block access from attacking hosts (majority of others with the removal of process stopped protecting the PC)
Deficiencies and the special feature:
1. The "heaviest" from the investigated solutions - several processes in the memory, which consume significant resources
2. in course of tests a certain glitch was noted with the bookmark which reflects statistics and protocols of system - instead of the statistics it showed NIS error warnings about the impossibility to start certain DLL
3. IDS it is easy to deceive and to block work with "useful" PC. This not specific to NIS, this is the problem of all similar systems
4. too close an integration with the system - this in the essence its plus, but the programs, which take root and are prescribed on the maximum into all possible places of system may not be desirable. |
